ISAVASYA UPANISHAD : - Mantram -2.

ISAVASYA UPANISHAD :

or

VAJASANEYI    SAMHITA    UPANISHAD

Mantram-2.

 Discussion - 9. "Gita"-2.47, 3.20" 'Duty' ....

Srimad Bhagavad-Gita  seems  to  have  sprung  directly  from  the  spirit  of  this  Upanishad.

The  Lord  has  used  the  sentiments  of  this  scripture  so  liberally  but  freely  in  the  Gita,  that  the  Song of  the  Lord  looks  almost  an  original  and  independent  work;  but  a  close  student  cannot  be  deceived.

When  Lord  Krishna  exhorts  Arjuna,  there  is  indeed  a  flavour  of  the  "Isavasya mantram"   now  under  discussion  here.***

***
1. "Therefore,  engage  yourself  in  doing  'karma'   only:- Gita: 4-15."

2." your  duty  is  only  to  do  'karma'   never  expect  the  fruits  of  it :
Gita : 2-47."

3. "Through  dedicated  'karma'   alone  Janaka  and  others  reached  true  perfection" -- Gita : 3-20.

There  are  eighteen  mantra-s  here  in  this  Upanishad,  and  we  find  eighteen  chapters  in  the  Gita.

Earlier  in  the  classic,  we  read  that  'Nara'   and   'Narayana'   did   tapas
in  the  'Bhadrinatha'    and  they  became  Arjuna  and  Krishna  of  the  Gita.

Even  taking  the  obvious  meaning  we  have,  in  Gita,  a  dialogue  between  Krishna ( Narayana )  and  Arjuna  ( Nara ) ;  between  God  ( Narayana )  and  man  ( Nara ).

In  this  Upanishad  also,  the  disciple  seems  to  be  Nara  ( na  lipyate  nare ).

"Total  surrender  unto  Narayana  and  to  work  in  a  spirit  of  selfless  service  is  the  burning  theme  of  both  this  Upanishad  and  the  discourses  in  the  Gita."
